We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and fitness, so we aim to capture the variety of ways women choose to be active to give you ideas and inspiration on how to live your best active life.
Tell us about yourself
My Name is Angela Tallon, I am 38 years old and live in Wooloowin, Brisbane. I’m married and have three children, Sam (7), Will (3) and Eva (2 next month!..... Nearly at the ‘no more nappies stage’ WOO HOO)... Oh, and our beloved 9 year old Golden Retriever, Chase.
I am the General Manager at Stellar Home - a start-up technology company based in Brisbane. We are building a web application, which is connecting trusted and vetted home service professionals with busy people. We launched in February this year and have been growing and expanding month-on-month. My husband also runs his own Electrical Contracting Company (Brisbane Electrical Services), so we are a very busy little family. I enjoy spending time with family and friends and love nothing more than a hot bath, glass of red and relaxing music on a Friday night.
What does active living mean to you?
Active living means being outdoors, exercising when I can and having a fridge full of fruit and vegies.
What do you like to do to stay active?
I like to try and get to the gym 3 times a week - I have recently started weight training which I really enjoy. It can be hard with our schedules but I do my best. We are also renovating our house and have raised it, so I run up and down our outdoor stairs a million times a day by default - usually with washing baskets, bags, kids etc etc ….
Have you always been active and healthy?
I would say yes - although looking back I was probably a bit naive about the benefit of exercise vs food intake. The ‘fit/strong’ trend was less popular 20 years ago :-)
What is your weekly routine?
I go to the gym on Tuesdays as I don’t technically work Tuesdays, and I usually go early Thursday mornings (as my husband leaves home at 5:30am it makes it hard to go before work, however he has the kids Thursday so I make the most of the time). And I try to do something on Saturday. I do need to improve this though LOL!
What daily habits keep you fit and healthy?
I take an anti-oxidant hit (called RESERVE) every morning and I cook healthy meals. I try and drink 3 Litres of water a day. I’ve just started to practise meditation which I am terrible at, but I’m working at it.
What is your best active living hack?
Don’t think about it too much. Pondering is procrastination.
What does a sample workout look like for you?
I have been doing 40 min cardio and weights - mixing it up with 20 min run, 10 min bike and 10 min shoulder grinder (love that machine). Then a mix of weights. I like the ab and boxing classes also.
Favourite healthy meal?
I love anything ‘stirfry’ - with lots of fresh herbs and chilli. I love chilli!
What challenges do you need to overcome in order to achieve healthy and active living?
Ha - where do I start!? LOL… my challenge is time. And I am a terrible sleeper as my mind doesn’t shut down, so I am challenging myself to meditate and adopt better sleeping patterns.
What is the best ‘side-effect’ of staying healthy and active?
Having a happy outlook on life, being able to be active with the kids and keep up with the constant running around.
Who inspires and motivates you?
I am inspired by my best friend who passed away last year from cancer. She was such a strong woman (inside and out) - and was always disciplined with exercise. When I am working out I think about her constantly as we would often exercise together… that keeps me going.
How do you overcome negative thoughts?
That’s an interesting question. I think for mothers coming back into the work force it can be a really overwhelming time (if it wasn’t overwhelming enough being at home with babies!) Our minds can play tricks on us and the self doubt comes into play much more. Paying full attention to the task at hand and focusing on listening reduces the chit chat in my head.
How do you manage days or periods where you are not as motivated?
I normally force myself do something that I have been putting off - It’s amazing how motivation returns after conquering something you have been dreading.
What do you do to treat yourself?
Facial at Cozmetics Ascot and a remedial massage
Top 3 songs on your workout playlist?
I actually play FIT radio… but the free version. It is fine and does the trick.
What is your active truth?
Be grateful. And I do truly believe in visualisation as a tool to attract the things you want in life. I am a natural day dreamer and quite enjoy being in my own thoughts most of the time… ‘Where energy goes, energy flows’.
