How She Does It -

Every week we interview women about how they incorporate active and healthy habits into their lives. We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and fitness, so we aim to capture the variety of ways women choose to be active to give you ideas and inspiration on how to live your best active life.
Tell us about yourself
I’m Carly - I’m a writer and full time online person. I’m the editor of smaggle.com, a website that teaches people how to be the star of their own lives. I’m the co-host of Straight and Curly and Sweet Teen Club podcasts. I’m also a crochet teacher at crochetcoach.com and a blogging teacher at littleblogbig.com. I live in Melbourne with my partner who is also a full time online person. I love red wine, frozen treats and Benedict Cumberbatch.
What does active living mean to you?
I’m a 10,000 steps a day advocate - I do it every day without fail. I also make sure I raise my heart rate and do 45 minutes of hardcore exercise 3 to 4 times per week. That’s what works best for me. I love the idea of yoga but it has zero effect on me so I need to really pump it.
What do you like to do to stay active?
I’m totally addicted to F45. Hard core. I’ve been doing it all year and I love it. I also have a treadmill and if it’s raining I’ll slam a quick 30 minute run. I also do my 10,000 every single day without fail.
Have you always been active and healthy?
Only from being a teenager onwards. I struggle a lot with my weight and have maintained a 20 kilo weight loss over 10 years so I really have to work at it. I started exercising hard when I was 16 and I’ve been doing it consistently ever since. I do it for my mental health more than anything. The second I stopped exercising for weight loss it became a whole different world to me.
What is your daily or weekly routine (if you have one)?
10,000 steps every day, plus F45 four days a week. I don’t do formal exercise on weekends but I’m extremely active and will probably do about 20,000 steps most Saturdays and Sundays.
What daily habits keep you fit and healthy?
Getting good sleep, avoiding alcohol and eating shit tonnes of veggies!
What is your best active living hack?
Exercise for your brain, not to lose weight. 80% of weight loss is what goes in your mouth, not how far you ran on the treadmill. Having said that exercise isn’t negotiable, you have to do it - just 30 minutes a day. It’s so worth it. Also get a step tracker!!!
What does a sample workout look like for you?
I like F45 because I don’t have to think about it but I love 7 Minute Workout App if I’m travelling.
Favourite healthy meal?
A huge bag of ready to stir fry veggies next to a yummy piece of salmon!
What challenges do you need to overcome in order to achieve healthy and active living?
It’s mainly mental. I’m in a really good place with my habits but it’s all about consistency and no extremes. Slow, steady good habits are the best way to stay in shape.
What is the best ‘side-effect’ of staying healthy and active?
Mood, not dying young, ageing well, feeling good, looking good, functioning at a high level, heaps of energy… it’s pretty much a no brainer.
What (or who) inspires and motivates you?
I know she cops a bad rap sometimes but I’m a fan of Michelle Bridges. I like that she says that motivation doesn’t exist. You either do it, or you don’t. I think she’s pretty sensible. Also keeping in good shape is herd work and she doesn’t sugar coat that.
How do you overcome negative thoughts?
Exercise! If I feel grumpy, exercise is definitely the best cure. I have to force myself, but I’ve never, ever regretted a work out ever.
How do you manage days or periods where you are not as motivated?
Go easy. Even if I’m sick, I try to get my steps in. If I’m hungover, I have to do it even more - it’s my punishment! I also like to throw money behind it. F45 is expensive and I’m a tight arse so it makes me go!
What do you do to treat yourself?
Top 3 songs on your workout playlist?
I’m a podcast gal most of the time but Michael Jackson gets a workout at the gym. Anything with a heavy drum beat is ace.
What is your active truth?
Move or die. For real, it’s scientifically proven that you die younger if you don’t move enough. Incentive much?
