How She Does It -

Every week we interview women about how they incorporate active and healthy habits into their lives. We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and fitness, so we aim to capture the variety of ways women choose to be active to give you ideas and inspiration on how to live your best active life.

Tell us about yourself

Hello, my name is Cate. I am a 49-year-old Brissy chick. I am definitely a late bloomer, a mother of two boys and wife. I had the boys in my very late 30’s. I didn't want to do anything because I was so tired and felt like crap. I had a couple of tough years there, getting my mind & body around being a Mum.

The biggest lesson I learnt was not to feel guilty about taking some me time. When you are a Mum & or caregiver you must replenish! I have also learnt to be inspired by other women and not to compare myself with them (that was a big lesson). Hitting a low and then finding my way out got me into a new chapter of my life, which brings me to the now and working as a Personal Stylist. I absolutely love my work and supporting women to be their best is hands down the best feeling.

What does active living mean to you?

Getting outside with the family on the weekend and hitting the park or the beach, with the skate boards, bikes, boogie boards and surf boards in tow.

What do you like to do to stay active?

I go to the gym for physical and mental health. I aim for 4 times a week. Sometimes it’s 3 and sometimes it’s 5 depending.

Have you always been active and healthy?

I was a very active kid and I was a competitive roller skater in the 70’s and early 80’s. After I left school I hit the gym seen, Lorna Jane was one of my instructors, she would bring along a basket of leotards to the class to sell!!! LOL, yes it’s when we wore the g-string on the outside!!! And NO I don’t have photos! So fashion trends and exercise has always been in my life.

What is your weekly routine?

I aim for two Pilates Reformer Classes, one Zumba class and one yoga class.

What daily habits keep you fit and healthy?

I try to eat whole foods and not much processed foods.

What does a sample workout look like for you?

I try and mix it up every few months, however I mostly do strength work. Zumba for cardio and or small interval runs on the treadmill.

Favourite healthy meal?

Sweet potato & salmon patties. Mash sweet potato, add one egg, tin of salmon, dessert spoon of flour, fresh herbs chopped thinly and grate whatever veg you have left over in the fridge. Then roll them into patties, coat in flour and pan fry. Serve with salad of veg. I make them up like burgers for the boys.

What is the best ‘side-effect’ of staying healthy and active?

Feeling good on the inside and the outside.

What inspires and motivates you?

My kids and my work.

How do you overcome negative thoughts?

Great question, up until a year or two ago I was bad at this! Now I practice focusing on the positives and only worrying about the things I can change.

How do you manage days or periods where you are not as motivated?

Most of the time I push myself, I always have a long list of jobs I try to get done. The secret for me is going day by day with my goal settings as things will always pop up and I may have to juggle things around. I want to have obtainable goals to achieve.

What do you do to treat yourself?

I have an inner party gal inside me. I love to go out for dinner and drinks with my hubby and friends. Also reflexology is a great treat.

Top 3 songs on your workout playlist?

I Gotta Feeling - Black Eyed Peas

Can’t Stop The Feeling - Justin Timberlake

We Don't Talk Anymore - Charlie Puth
