Tell us about yourself
I’m Julie Mathers and I’m CEO of Flora & Fauna, an eco ethical retailer in NSW. I have a wonderful husband Tom and a menagerie of animal children including a pig, Rosie, and four cats. I love my work and enjoy running, skiing, diving and exploring nature.
What does active living mean to you?
Loving and living your life. Don’t waste a day, take opportunities and live a full life.
What do you like to do to stay active?
I run, walk, ski and do a bit of yoga from time to time although I am terrible at that as I’m not very stretchy. I also think it’s really important to keep your mind active and brain train. Keep pushing yourself, keep learning and keep being sociable.
What is your definition of healthy?
Happy, fulfilled and living a version of your best self.
Have you always been active and healthy?
I’ve always been active and run many marathons. I love skiing and being outdoors and am a bit notorious for skiing all day without breaks; it’s more like boot camp! I tore my ACL in my knee close to two years ago and it’s been a long journey back to health following two surgeries with another one due. It’s made being healthy and active a challenge but not insurmountable and you have to adjust your expectations and also appreciate the small wins. There’s definitely a mind game involved. I am also vegan so I am very focused on plant based meals and nutrition.
What is your daily or weekly routine if you have one?
I try and squeeze in 5-6 runs and some time in our gym. I am just about to start pilates in a bid to gain some core strength.
What daily habits keep you fit and healthy?
I force myself out running for the physical activity and also the mental space. I would love to say that I get plenty of sleep but I don’t sadly. Sleep and owning your own business doesn’t mix well.
What is your best active living hack?
Set goals and targets and enter a fun run, then you have to train.
Favourite healthy meal?
Avocado on anything!
What health craze are you guilty of loving?
Since 2005 I have regularly gone on 2 week plus juice detoxes. I find it’s a great opportunity to cleanse my mind, reset my body and get creative. I have to take myself away from home to do them as there are too many temptations in my house and I need me time.
What challenges do you need to overcome in order to achieve healthy and active living?
Getting enough sleep, dedicating time to health and not putting it on the back burner and working around or with old injuries!
What is the best ‘side-effect’ of staying healthy and active?
A sharp, active mind
How do you overcome negative thoughts?
I’m a naturally very positive person and adopt the glass half full philosophy on life. I believe things happen for a reason and I’m pragmatic so if something happens I simply get on with addressing it and sorting it out. I also like surrounding myself with positive people and I think this is very important to have a really supportive inner circle.
How do you manage days or periods where you are not as motivated?
Re-prioritise so I do things which are quick wins whether that's work related or exercise related. A 20 minute run is better than not doing one at all.
What do you do to treat yourself?
Wine is a lovely reward!
