Every week we interview women about how they incorporate active and healthy habits into their lives. We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and fitness, so we aim to capture the variety of ways women choose to be active to give you ideas and inspiration on how to live your best active life.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Katie Dickens. I am 29 and the owner and director of Dance Barre By Katie Dickens.
I have the most incredible partner who supports me 100% and a beautiful little step-son who is 5 ½ years old.
I love to read self-development and motivational books, it just my way of escaping from the list of things 'to do' that always seem to be running through my mind. I draw inspiration from others success. Reading also helps keep me mindful, grateful and inspired. We all need to be inspired.
I love to cook and create clean healthy meals for myself, the boys and my friends. I can actually spend hours in the kitchen when I should really be working or answering emails. I love to know what’s going into the food myself and what the boys are eating.
I sit down late at night to wind down with a TV series on Netflix or Itunes. Another great way for me to escape all my thoughts and relax with my partner.
What does active living mean to you?
Creating daily habits. Nourishment, daily activity - exercise doesn’t need to take up hours of your day. A 30 minute class at my studio is enough to help you achieve results and feel good about yourself. And mindfulness – filtering your thoughts and trying your best to only hold onto positive thoughts and being happy in the moment.
All too often we get caught up in creating stories in our heads about circumstances and situations. We are all guilty of this. I cannot stress enough what a difference positive thinking and self love makes to our goals when speaking about health and fitness. Learning to love yourself and your body makes all the difference in how your active journey will go and your overall happiness. It is amazing the transformations I see in the women I train who choose to apply my principles to nourish not only their body but their mind and to create daily habits that work towards overall happiness, self love and a healthy body! When you are happy your body will work with you not against you.
What do you like to do to stay active?
Because I love to feel great! Let’s be honest, when we aren’t nourishing and fuelling our bodies we tend to not feel or be at our best. I also have a daily commitment to be at my best for my members. I do my best to be a positive role model. I am not perfect and have my days and at times weeks where I won’t train, but I think it’s important to allow your body the rest when you feel you need it and to not let yourself feel guilty about it.
Have you always been active and healthy?
I have always been active. I grew up as a dancer and succeeded quite well within the dance industry. My training was vigorous and continuous. This kept me very active.
I have not always been healthy. I used to binge eat at times due to stress and work load. Even now at times when I get stressed or anxious I find the habit creep back in. I have much more control over it now and can recognise when I am stressed and try to manage my stress in more useful ways. For me it is training and cooking.
What daily habits keep you fit and healthy?
Green smoothie or peppermint tea. Loads of water. Thirty minutes minimum of exercise. Veggie soups. Teaching. Personal training both personally and with my clients.
Favourite healthy meal?
Vegan veggie soup and my daily smoothies.
What challenges do you need to overcome in order to achieve healthy and active living?
When I am stressed not just reaching for what’s quick and easy to eat.
Being organised and prepared with my meals.
Having mental toughness and making sure I keep calm and relaxed so I can handle changing situations as they arise by thinking clearly and rationally (I am so still working on this).
Even when I am tired, and I do at times with the workload I have, making sure I still physically get involved when teaching a class at the very least, at least one class a day. I can get a pretty good workout when training with my ladies in the studio and I always feel better for it. With saying that I listen to my body if I need a rest I certainly take it.
What is the best ‘side-effect’ of staying healthy and active?
No headaches, getting through each day with energy usually left over. Mental toughness and overall happiness within myself and my skin.
What (or who) inspires and motivates you?
Seeing and hearing from other like-minded successful business women within the health and fitness industry. Seeing those younger than me achieve their optimal of success. Reading and learning from others who have walked a similar path to me. Managing to hold onto my dream and continuing to add to my goal.
How do you overcome negative thoughts?
Affirmations and self-talk until I have control again and can ‘let it go’. My life coach is amazing as well in helping me achieve this.
How do you manage days or periods where you are not as motivated?
I do my best to maintain healthy eating. I end up with more carbohydrates in my meals and I won’t exercise until I feel I want to again. Plus I allow myself the time to rest. I also do self-belief affirmations to build myself up again.
What do you do to treat yourself?
Cheat meal, massage and catch up with the girls.
