In our 'How She Does It' series we interview women about how they incorporate active and healthy habits into their lives. We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and fitness, so we aim to capture the variety of ways women choose to be active to give you ideas and inspiration on how to live your best active life.

Tell us about yourself

I’m Kimmy Smith, I’m the founder of the Fit Mummy Project App and a Mum to two little girls with another one on the way! I live in Cronulla in Sydney with my husband Ryan and our girls. My passion is supporting women to feel healthy, confident and strong throughout their pregnancy and as they begin their journey into motherhood.

  • What do you like to do to stay active?
  • Everything! Right now, I’m in my final trimester of my third pregnancy, so I am happy to be able to be doing any movement. I have loved so many different forms of exercise and movement over my life. I used to play professional netball for the NSW Swifts, so I loved high intensity sport and competition. I used to love to run and would do half marathons and fun runs in our off-season. Since becoming a Mum, I discovered Yoga and fell in love with the practice. I am now a qualified Yoga teacher specialising in pre and postnatal yoga. I also love Barre, strength and just being out in nature swimming or going for a walk.

  • Have you always been active and healthy?
  • Yep! I think growing up playing sport meant that active living was always a huge part of my life. My Mum was very health conscious as well, so when we were growing up, being active and healthy was just a part of who we were. Exercise has always been such a huge part of my life that I couldn’t imagine my life without it.

  • What daily habits keep you fit and healthy?
  • I try to exercise every day, even if it is just for 15 minutes a day. As a busy Mum, I often find that exercise is the simplest form of ‘me time’. It’s a chance to take care of my own health and wellbeing and to do something that makes me feel good!

I also try to meditate every day, I often do this first thing in the morning or just before bed. It helps me to clear my mind and release any stress that I’ve been holding onto.

Eating healthy + nutritious food has been such a huge part of my life for so long that I don’t even really think about it anymore. But I always balance out my green smoothies, soups and salads with some sneaky treats. I think being able to live in balance is key to a healthy life.

  • What is your best active living hack?
  • Commit to moving your body for just 15 minutes every day! I tell myself that I just need to do 15 minutes of exercise a day and it can be whatever I feel like! Often we have this all or nothing approach when it comes to exercise and movement. Everyone can fit 15 minutes into their day to move their body - even if it’s just 15 minutes of yoga before bed. It can make such a huge difference to how we feel that day. Being consistent with exercise is the key to making it an integral part of your life!

    Favourite healthy meal?

So many! This Green Soup is probably my go-to meal. I make it almost every week. Depending on how I’m feeling, I might have it with baked salmon or if I want something a bit naughty, I’ll add some haloumi on top. I love that I can use any leftover veggies to make an amazing meal.

I also love a good paleo muffin or banana bread. I’m a massive sweet tooth, so I love when I find a good healthy sweet treat.

  • What health craze are you guilty of loving?
  • Kombucha. My husband wants us to buy shares in a kombucha company cause I love it so much!

  • What challenges do you need to overcome in order to achieve healthy and active living?
  • I have had a lot of postnatal complications after the birth of my two daughters. I suffer from incontinence and have a pelvic organ prolapse. It means that I can’t do a lot of the exercise that I used to love. I tried to push through and keep doing high intensity exercise, but it was just making my symptoms worse. It took me a long time to realise that living a healthy and active lifestyle doesn’t have to mean being super fit or competitive. Now I just focus on movement that makes me feel strong and energised and healthy. I try to move for the joy of being able to move my body, rather than for any external purpose.

  • What (or who) inspires and motivates you?
  • I’m inspired by the amazing strength of women and mothers. Since creating the Fit Mummy Project, I have seen so many women with incredible inner strength. They may not be the most physically strong, but they show up for their families with such love and compassion time and time again. It is incredibly inspiring and it motivates me to provide them with simple tools to help them to take care of themselves in the same way they care for their families.

  • How do you overcome negative thoughts?
  • Sometimes I do it in a really mature way, by allowing the negative thought time to surface. I think the worst thing we can do with negative thoughts is to try to ignore them or push them away. Whenever I can, I try to listen to the thought and feel what is underneath it.

But sometimes I’ll also just cry uncontrollably for no real reason or find myself eating a block of chocolate!

  • How do you practice self care?
  • I’m all about doing little things daily. My exercise and meditation practice is part of my self-care. I also try to do something nice for myself each day. Whether that is just enjoying a cup of tea or a yummy treat or getting out and being in nature. Just a little something that fills my cup up! Oh and I love being pampered, so occasionally I’ll splurge on a facial or massage treatment!

What do you do to treat yourself?

I love simple pleasures as a way to treat myself. My faves are: A hot bath with epsom salt and lavender, Haigh’s Dark Chocolate, Coffee or a massage or acupuncture treatment!
