How She Does It - Lisa Dreyer from the Every Day Mums

In our 'How She Does It' series we interview women about how they incorporate active and healthy habits into their lives. We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and fitness, so we aim to capture the variety of ways women choose to be active to give you ideas and inspiration on how to live your best active life.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Lisa. I am a 35 year old mother of 3 boys aged 14, 10 and nearly 4. I’ve been a Stay at Home Mother for 15 years and this year I have been studying Educational Support so that next year I can re-enter the work force.

What does active living mean to you? 

Well I am not as active as I would like to be. My dislike of exercise, the cold, the wind, sweating and lack of co-ordination really prevents me from moving my body. In my head I’d love to be someone who gets up early and goes for a walk but I really hate the cold. And waking early. And walking.

What do you like to do to stay active? 

My 3 boys keep me pretty active. There’s rarely a minute to sit down. I do however have a standing desk so that when I’ve been studying, I haven’t been sitting. As a family we love daylight savings because we walk after dinner to help with digestion and tire the littlest one out just a little bit more. When the 4 year old is away on holidays with his grandparents, I’ll often do laps of the soccer field while my son is at soccer training or before school pick up. We also walk to the shops sometimes for our groceries instead of driving. Again, the weather has to be Lisa friendly haha.

What is your definition of healthy?

Balanced diet, fresh air, mental calmness, positive relationships and laughter.

Have you always been active and healthy?

No. Noooooooooo. No. Before the birth of my second son I was about 30kg heavier than I am now. I was a reckless eater and ate the same food and portion sizes as my husband who was also 40kgs heavier than he is now. It’s been a decade since then, and now I bounce over a 5kg gain or loss depending on the season. And if Nutella is on sale. 

What is your daily or weekly routine if you have one?

I have no physical routine. Diet however is different. Diet is so much more important (I believe) in terms of feeling good and keeping healthy. Exercise is good, don’t get me wrong. I think it’s crucial for strong muscles and bones, blood circulation and mental health but the food I put into my body is far more important than burning it off. Every morning I have some homeopathics (for adhesions from my 3 cesareans) Liquid Iron, Chlorophyyl and Vitamin C. I also love Lemon Water and Green Tea. They are daily staples. I also try to eat my food in a small window so from about 9am-5;30pm. Gives my body a great amount of time to digest without more food being added in. I feel great when I wake up.

What daily habits keep you fit and healthy? 

Don’t eat after dinner. And eat dinner early. Hydrate. Drink as much water as you can stomach. And then some more. I also follow the Blood Grouping diet. (Eat Right For Your Type). Which basically are foods and drinks that my blood type (A) digests and tolerates the best.

What is your best active living hack?

Don’t carry everything downstairs in one trip. It forces you to go back up and adds a workout that you wouldn’t have normally done. Squat. Squat from the basket while you’re hanging your washing out. Squat to empty the dishwasher. Dance around the house while you’re at home. Doesn’t matter if you look like a dork. Just do it. It’s fun. Keeps your body moving. And limits your sitting.

Favourite healthy meal?

Hmmm, I make this Roasted pumpkin dish that’s pretty delicious. Toasted spelt and rye sourdough with some goats cheese and basil pesto spread all over it, roasted pumpkin, rocket leaves and a drizzle of pomegranate balsamic vinegar. Oh it’s so good. I want it right now actually.

What health craze are you guilty of loving?

I don’t know if it is a craze but I add Caramelised buckinis, walnuts and raw honey to anything sweet I make (porridge, peanut butter toast, pancakes) and that’s pretty delicious.

What challenges do you need to overcome in order to achieve healthy and active living?

Being cold. Cold stops me moving. Cold makes me want to eat potato.

What is the best side effect of staying healthy and active?

Feeling good. Having energy. Great skin.

What (or who) inspires and motivates you?

Friends and family. When they are healthy, I want to stay motivated. It works so much better when everyone is positive. We hold each other accountable. My kids also inspire and motivate me. I need to keep up and lead by example. I want them to have healthy, happy lives free from illness.

How do you overcome negative thoughts? 

I don’t some days. They get me. But I control my thoughts so If I want to feel good, I have to think good. I usually bring myself back out of it. Unless it’s period week then I just let it go. I know its hormonal.

 How do you practice self care? 

I don’t practice self care enough. That’s for sure. I do lack severely in this area. But I will. Young kids take up a lot of time and finances.

How do you manage days or periods where you are not as motivated? 

I just let them happen. Sometimes the body needs a break. Sometimes your mind doesn’t want to think. Let it happen and move on. I don’t beat myself up about it.

What do you do to treat yourself?

Again, I don’t really. Being a stay at home mum means I get to do a lot of things that my working friends don’t get to do so the fact that I get to do school events or be home when my kids are sick is a great thing. I do love being able to be so involved. That’s a treat right? Kind of. It also means that I am never alone haha.

Lauren Patterson is pretty awesome (@_laurenkate) and Luke Zocchi (@zocobodypro) has hilarious healthy eating videos. My 3rd fave account is any meme account. I deadset could waste years laughing and tagging friends.
