In our 'How She Does It' series we interview women about how they incorporate active and healthy habits into their lives. We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and fitness, so we aim to capture the variety of ways women choose to be active to give you ideas and inspiration on how to live your best active life.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Matilda but growing up I have always just been Tilda ( besides when I was getting in trouble from my parents then I got the whole (MATILDA ROSE NICOL) haha, I’m 19, I recently completed my diploma of screen and media makeup, but now I want to go to uni to do a Bachelor of Social Work. I currently live in Brisbane QLD, but grew up in a tiny town called Dirranbandi, which has a population of around 600! I’m one of 4 kids. I have an older brother Tom, older sister Eliza and a younger brother Will. My main interests include makeup, doing some form of physical activity everyday (even if its just taking the dogs to the dog park or nudgee beach on the weekends), and when it comes to fashion - I love earrings and lots of colour!
What does active living mean to you?
As someone that is all about body positivity and self love I see exercising or being active in a completely different way to some people. I don’t do it to lose weight or have smaller thighs, I do it for my mental and physical health! Endorphins are a great thing.
What do you like to do to stay active?
I have two dogs so I love taking them for walks to the park. They also love doggie beaches! It’s a win win they have their exercise and we have fun! It makes me feel great.
What is your definition of healthy?
I think healthy is as much about mental health as it is physical health, because they both work together.
Have you always been active and healthy?
No, I definitely go through phases that’s for sure! I feel like that’s totally normal though, and even the most active people lose motivation sometimes. So when this happens I try to regain motivation by doing some exercises that I enjoy more like swimming, boxing and walking the dogs! In summer, I’ll swim laps in my pool most days, because it feels least like exercise and more like a hobby. Plus living in Brisbane’s hot humid weather means my whole family is in the pool in the afternoons, I always challenge my little brother to races! When I was in primary school I even made it to state level for swimming!
What is your daily or weekly routine?
I really don’t have one, I just go with the flow. But the exercises I do every week (normally) are walking the dogs, swimming, I try to do a bit of boxing with my partner and some times I’ll go to the gym.
What daily habits keep you fit and healthy?
I drink so much water! On a normal day I’ll drink 3-4 litres a day.
Favourite healthy meal?
ZOODLES (zucchini noodles)! They are so versatile and can be go with so many different foods. My favourite meal with zoodles includes green pesto, chicken breast, sun dried tomatoes, spinach, olives and a bit of Parmesan cheese! Trust me, it’s delicious! I normally just buy the zoodles from Coles to take the time out of spiralling them myself.
What health craze are you guilty of loving?
Apple cider vinegar, I swear it makes you feel great! I normally just do a shot worth mixed into a glass of water every morning and scull it. Apparently, it enhances weight loss, helps with blood sugar levels, improves skin a lot, helps people who suffer with reflux and lowers cholesterol. I’ve been doing it for about a year!
What is the best 'side-effect' of staying healthy and active?
Mentally you feel so much better about yourself because of the endorphins and I found a lot of the negative comments I used to say to myself about my body started to go away because I felt healthier.
What (or who) inspires or motivates you?
One of my best friends Bronte, she works a full time job, and another part time job, as well as ALWAYS making time to go to the gym or a F45 class! She is so fit and determined and she works her butt off, she is also an amazing hockey player. Ashley Graham, she is absolutely killing it with her modelling career as a curve model, her attitude is just so sassy and I love it! She also does amazing body positivity speeches that I love. Her confidence is contagious.
How do you overcome negative thoughts?
I used to get so down about it when I was younger as I was bullied a lot about my weight etc. However, I always had such a great support system. My mum and my sister always reassured me that “ A tiger doesn’t lose sleep over the opinion of a sheep”. Now I always say to myself that “I’m a tiger” when I have negative thoughts about myself because they came from others trying to bring me down.
How do you practice self care?
Always have time to do something for yourself even if it is just having a long bath with a nice bath bomb, trust me it really helps!
How do you manage days or periods where you are not as motivated?
I have a lot of those days but honestly I just make sure I tell myself that its ok, don’t beat yourself up about it. Sometimes your body just needs a break, just don’t let it get you stuck in a rut.
What do you do to treat yourself?
I love eating out, my partner works 6 days a weeks so normally on Sundays we will go out for breakfast or lunch together. It’s a lovely treat, but I also love getting my lashes done!
