How She Does It - Michelle Redfern

In our 'How She Does It' series we interview women about how they incorporate active and healthy habits into their lives. We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and fitness, so we aim to capture the variety of ways women choose to be active to give you ideas and inspiration on how to live your best active life.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Michelle Redfern, I am 53 years young, I am a business owner & non-executive board director, married to the love of my life, my wife Rhonda. We live in the CBD of beautiful Melbourne with our two furry friends, our Cats Winston & Ivy. I run my businesses Advancing Women in Business & Sport, Women Who Get It and Culturally Diverse Workforces from my office which is conveniently located on the ground floor of our home. I am an advocate, activist and agitator for gender and culturally equality and inclusion. I am an Australian Rules Football fan who is particularly passionate about female participation in all aspects of sport, on and off the field.
What does active living mean to you?
I am mindful, deliberate and purposeful about my four key priorities that I ‘audit’ every week using my Advancing Women “Life Audit” worksheet:
Sleep: 8 hours, every night, no exceptions. Sleep is imperative to allow my body and mind to repair and rejuvenate so I can be at my best every single day.
Move: I wear an apple watch with an activity tracker to ensure that I am standing, walking, moving my body every day. It is too easy to succumb to a sedentary lifestyle (which I used to have) and again, being mindful, deliberate and purposeful about moving means I am keeping my body in the best possible condition.
Mindfulness: I have a very full life and a very active mind. I meditate regularly, in different ways to allow my mind to have a break and to enable me to keep being creative and good at problem solving (which is essentially what my clients want me to do for them)
US & ME: I am military in my discipline about making sure my wife and I have plenty of time for just us. I am just as military about making sure I am on my own (my cave days) doing stuff that makes me happy and well. It is too easy to forget this, and I don’t want to neglect my relationship or myself, it is too critical.
What do you like to do to stay active?
I walk, everywhere! I love my early morning walks with my wife around Docklands, or when we escape the city, along the beach at Torquay. I walk to as many of my meetings and gigs as I can.
What is your definition of healthy?
Being well enough in mind, body and spirit to live the best life you can. I am no guru believe me. I love Tim Tams, Rosé and Twisties as much as the next person, but everything (mostly) in moderation is the key isn’t it? I also know that a heathy mind and proactive management of my mental health is fundamental to me living my best life yet.
Have you always been active and healthy?
Nope! But I chose to make significant changes to my body and lifestyle some years ago when it was time to value myself a lot more than I had previously. I am no skinny supermodel and never will be. But I know I generally treat my body pretty well because I love it and respect it. Let’s face it, my body created two humans, fed them and cared for them, what’s not to love about that?
What daily habits keep you fit and healthy?
I make sure that I have met my standards and move goals every day where possible. I also religiously and enjoyably drink 2+ litres of water a day.
What is your best active living hack?
Walk, walk, walk. If I can walk somewhere I will….in fact I try to manage my diary so that I can walk as much as possible to everywhere I go. Incidental exercise and movement helps in so many ways, particularly for women who are living very full lives.
Favourite healthy meal?
Anything with salmon in it. My beautiful friend Ana is a chef, she makes the most amazing salmon with a citrus & leaf salad. I love it so much I had her make it for my wedding feast in March this year.
What health craze are you guilty of loving?
It's not a craze for me as I’ve been doing it on and off for 30+ years. Meditation is a game changer and I can feel the difference when I am regularly meditating versus not.
What challenges do you need to overcome in order to achieve healthy and active living?
I am out at night a lot and travel. So avoiding the deep fried foods and heavy meals is key. I don’t like to eat much red meat anymore and try to avoid bread (even though I love it!)
What is the best side effect of staying healthy and active?
I am happy! I can live a full life with relative ease. People often say to me how do you do everything that you do…my answer is that I am extremely organised, passionate about what I do and I look after myself.
What or who inspires and motivates you?
My wife inspires me. She is clever, logical, generous, balanced and my biggest supporter. We have very differing views on many things, but as our relationship is based on respect we can have the most awesome discussions and debates. We both work mindfully, deliberately and purposefully at our relationship as we both know that we can’t take each other for granted. She has made me the best version of myself.
What do you do to treat yourself?
Nothing beats a massage! I also love having my hair done. I do both very regularly! Because I deserve it.
Top 3 songs on your workout playlist?
Only 3?? I don’t workout per se, but my walking playlist is a bunch of 70’ & 80’s tracks that I adore….My Sharona, Nutbush City Limits, Dancing Queen, Blame it on the Boogie. My biggest challenge is not dancing in public by accident!
