In our 'How She Does It' series we interview women about how they incorporate active and healthy habits into their lives. We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and fitness, so we aim to capture the variety of ways women choose to be active to give you ideas and inspiration on how to live your best active life.

Tell us about yourself 

I’m Nicole, 25 years old, an Account Executive at commercialrealestate.com.au (part of Domain.com.au) and I live in Sydney, Australia. I live my with my Boyfriend and our fur baby, Irish Terrier, Alfred (Just like Batmans Butler). In case you didn’t pick that up I’m a big fan of superheroes, in particular Batman, I LOVE movies and tv shows A LOT (I’m very proud of my VIP Cinebuzz status), dancing around the house like I’m a Ginger Beyoncé, hanging out with friends and family and just being a positive person.

What does active living mean to you? 

If you’re bored, do something. Go see what’s happening at the shops, or the beach, or do something different, whatever is going to make you happy and feel like you’ve had a day well spent.

What do you like to do to stay active? 

Walking. Don’t get me wrong, I love the gym and training but lately, just catching up with friends and going for a walk or taking my nephew up the road (as slow as he can waddle for a 1 year old) for a coffee has been my thing these days, especially as I can’t play sports anymore due to having the knees of an 80 year old.

What is your definition of healthy? 

If I’m being honest, it’s all about mentality for me. Some of my favourite people I look up to for my own health and fitness are just positive people living their best lives. Mental health is so damn important. What good is being able to do 50 push ups if you go to bed sad every night?

Have you always been active and healthy? 

Look I wouldn’t say “always”, but I go through phases. I’m trying to be more conscious of “always” being healthy, in the past rewarding myself with a month of drinking and partying or a holiday of over eating hasn’t done me any good.

What is your daily or weekly routine if you have one? 

I’m currently working with my coach @valkyriestrength_pres, so my daily routine is pretty structured as per her plan: 4.30am wake up, gym, eat, work, eat some more, gym again at 5pm, dinner, supper, bed at 8pm – In a super quick nutshell.

What daily habits keep you fit and healthy? 

My @W8lossjourn3y Instagram account is the big one. I check in daily with a post to keep myself on track, it started out as purely a food diary and has evolved into a daily update on where I’m at, what my thoughts are and how I’m tracking. I’m coming up to day 600 and have built an amazing support network in the Instagram fitfam community that I’m accountable to.

What is your best active living hack? 

Get 8 hours sleep every night, if you can. I reckon 9 times out of 10 we can go to bed earlier, we just prioritise other things over it and that’s always affected my attitude the next day towards food, training and the day in general.

Favourite healthy meal?

I can’t get enough of greek yoghurt, frozen berries and sugar free maple syrup! Get to Coles or Woolies and buy yourself some, it sits with normal maple syrup and is made by ‘Queen’, you won’t regret it.

What health craze are you guilty of loving? 

Does buying way too much activewear with Afterpay count? Guilty!

What challenges do you need to overcome in order to achieve healthy and active living? 

My undying love for food. I love going out for meals and I love treating myself to burgers and chips, chocolate, ice cream and anything that’s pretty much not supposed to be consumed in large quantities. It’s a problem, I know.

What is the best 'side-effect' of staying healthy and active?

When I’ve been training and eating well and making healthy choices my mental health is amazing and I just feel good. I think genuine long-lasting happiness is so undervalued and often forgotten about, we settle for small happy moments throughout the day.

What (or who) inspires or motivates you? 

My coach, my boyfriend and my Instagram Fitfam

How do you practice self care? 

By being slightly selfish and doing things that are going to sit right with me and make me happy. When you start to put yourself first and prioritise the things you need in your life you actually set yourself up in a better way to help others and influence those around you to also live a positive and happy life. If you don’t love yourself how can you expect someone else to?

How do you manage days or periods where you are not as motivated? 

Often if I’m having a bad day what I need to do is have a shower, eat some dinner and go to bed early. Usually i’m just tired and moody and as mum would say to me “you know how you get when you’re tired” and she’s always right (love you mum).

What do you do to treat yourself? 

Go to the movies and grab a gigantic coke zero and maybe a bag of m&m’s– that’s me done.

I’m proud to say at the moment it’s

“Cool Rider” from Grease 2,

“The way you make me feel” by Michael Jackson

and “Somebody to Love” by Justin Bieber

I’m going through a weird throwback/musical soundtrack phase and I blame Netflix.

What are your top 3 Instagram accounts that you follow? 

JUST 3! Of course @julzjulzjulzz, @transformingmary and @betterlatethannever2016. There are so many more, picking just 3 doesn’t seem right!
