We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and fitness, so we aim to capture the variety of ways women choose to be active to give you ideas and inspiration on how to live your best active life. 

Tell us about yourself

Hi my name is Rachael, a curvy Mama with a deep love for the perfect jeans + tee + flats combo. You’ll find me sipping my skinny latte while on the run after the Bebe and for Ruby & Lilli. I adore fresh flowers, champagne, a bold lippy and really really good dark chocolate. I’m passionate about expanding the options for curvy women of all sizes, shapes and ages with luxury tees and tops but I’m not stopping there… the plans for Ruby & Lilli are big and fabulous and I can’t wait to share them with my gorgeous customers as time goes on!

What does active living mean to you?

Active living to me means a lifestyle where incidentals add up as a whole to create a healthy and happy life.

What do you like to do to stay active?

Big walks with the family where I can hold my husband hostage and use him as a sounding board for my ideas! I’ve also started yoga recently and love it! 

Have you always been active and healthy?

No. I hate ‘exercise’. Incidental exercise is key for me. I recently started Curvy Yoga at Stretch Yoga (Holland Park) and BIG SURPRISE (to me) I absolutely LOVE it! After 4 weeks of the course (it goes for 6) I’ve started taking Simple Stretch classes as well.

What is your daily or weekly routine?

Unfortunately, no routine for me, every day is so very different between being a Mama, Business owner, wife, friend, human being…

What daily habits keep you fit and healthy?

I fill up a 2L water bottle each morning and try to finish it twice, even if I only finish one bottle it’s still a great reminder of how much (or how little) water I’ve had that day. I also downloaded the HEADSPACE app (Apple) and before going to sleep each night do a short session to clear my mind.

What is your best active living hack?

Always dress comfortably and in comfortable shoes. That way any day can become a park day, or a beach walk etc. Comfortable doesn’t have to mean dowdy either! I live in skinny jeans, R&L tees and converse sneakers.

What does a sample workout look like for you?

Running after my 4-year-old who LOVES being chased, and one hour yoga classes 2-4 times per week.

Favourite healthy meal?

Quinoa with roasted vegetables and feta with a homemade dressing of balsamic vinegar, mustard and olive oil.

What challenges do you need to overcome in order to achieve healthy and active living?

Making time for myself! I always put myself last on the very long list of things I need to do each day. It is something I am working on though and have noticed a drastic difference in stress levels since starting yoga.

What is the best ‘side-effect’ of staying healthy and active?

More energy. Crazy as it is, the more you stay active and healthy the more energy you have to continue to do so. Starting is always the hardest part.

What (or who) inspires and motivates you?

Life! My gorgeous son, my beautiful friends, my amazing husband, the wonderful women I have the honour of working and connecting with via Ruby & Lilli… the list is endless!

How do you overcome negative thoughts?

Everyone has negative thoughts, it’s how long you allow yourself to dwell on them and what you say to yourself afterwards that is the important thing. Always be kind to yourself and NEVER compare yourself to strangers on social media.

How do you manage days or periods where you are not as motivated?  

I don’t beat myself up. There will be times that I am so tired or frantic that my motivation leaves and Netflix beckons, but don’t let it go too long. One day, be it the first or the tenth, you will need to kick yourself in the butt and get out of your funk and the longer you leave it the harder it is.

What do you do to treat yourself?

Another thing that I am terrible at! But yoga has become my treat, and I feel amazing afterwards!

What is your active truth?

Be the best version of you. This means healthy and happy because you only get one shot at this beautiful thing called life.

Finally, tell us a bit about your biz

Initially launching as a plus size luxury slogan tee label, I was overwhelmed with requests for smaller sizes and within 18 months I had expanded the range from 12/M to 24/4X to XXS/6 to 6X/28. The range has also developed from slogan only, to luxury basics and patterns/prints as well as tanks and accessories. All personally designed by myself from start to finish, each design is limited edition and quantities are kept small as it is important to me that each woman feels special and unique in her Ruby & Lilli tee/top. Every tee is made to fit and flatter curves of any size and shape with additional length, longer sleeves, flattering fabrics, and the signature Ruby & Lilli details which add sparkle + sass. I believe that anything in life can be luxurious and glamorous, especially a t-shirt.
