Every week we interview women about how they incorporate active and healthy habits into their lives. We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and fitness, so we aim to capture the variety of ways women choose to be active to give you ideas and inspiration on how to live your best active life.  

Tell us about yourself

My name is Renee, I am 23 years old and a full-time manager at Wholesomeness – an amazing organic café, catering, home delivery and health coaching service. I also study nutritional medicine and naturopathy full-time in Brisbane. I have lived in Brisbane for over a year now and love it! I’m originally from a beautiful little beach town Mackay; I love yoga, holistic health, metaphysics and truly enjoy nature!

What does active living mean to you?

It means getting yourself out there and doing what you love. It may be yoga one day and karate the next but each day active living will keep you stronger, healthier and balanced. Each person is different; we all live different lives but the small things count whether it’s running the stairs instead of the elevator or doing squats while you do the dishes.

What do you like to do to stay active?

I love yoga and anything outdoors especially hiking and bushwalks. They are my favourite! I love swimming at the beach on a summer’s day and just getting outside (we are stuck inside way too long!)

Have you always been active and healthy?
I have always been quite active although I have my moments. We all live very busy lives so sometimes it’s difficult to be consistently active. Sometimes I don’t get to yoga because life just gets too busy! Oops! But that’s just how it is sometimes. You just do the best you can.

What is your daily or weekly routine (if you have one)?

I wake up and sit down for breakfast, It’s important to think through your day and appreciate your meals, not just rushing around and running out the door with nothing in your belly! I try to do yoga each afternoon, I do it from home and choose what I feel that day – whether it be relaxing or hardcore!

What daily habits keep you fit and healthy?

Sitting down for meals, ensuring that I cook all of my meals or have them prepared. My yoga and meditation is important to me to keep me balanced, strong and inspired by the world and all that is. We are such amazing creatures, we can do so much and life is such a gift.

What is your best active living hack?

It’s all about the small things. I always make sure I have snacks prepared so I don’t get to the point where I’m starving. I watch, read and listen to holistic health podcasts daily and it keeps me inspired to be the best I can.

What does a sample workout look like for you?

I enjoy vinyasa yoga, it‘s an inspiring way to complement your morning or end your day. Either way I just love it! You feel stronger, more in touch with your body each time, yoga is definitely a journey, and there is no rush. It focuses on re-aligning your body, mind and spirit.

Favourite healthy meal?

I love a beautiful salad with a nice piece of wild-caught Alaskan salmon – just beautiful.

What challenges do you need to overcome in order to achieve healthy and active living?

Time-management! It can be so difficult to keep an active lifestyle and we all slip at some point. I think that we need to prioritise and just do it, don’t think too much about it, just know that it will make you feel a million times better when you’re done.

What is the best ‘side-effect’ of staying healthy and active?

There are a tonne of wonderful ‘side effects’ to a healthy and active lifestyle. Strength, power and building bone density, however, to me I think the best would be a steady and balanced mind.

What inspires and motivates you?

My studies of nutritional medicine and naturopathy inspire me each day. Learning the wondrous intricacies of the body truly allows you to indulge and appreciate your body and mind.

How do you overcome negative thoughts?

Meditation, affirmations and deep breathing is important to me. Negative thoughts can overwhelm and completely deplete someone entirely. I try to nip them in the bud! As soon as a negative thought comes in, I ponder why. Am I feeling insecure, sad, angry or emotional? Why? It’s best to understand why you are having these feelings and appreciate yourself to find a solution. Meditation provides unconscious guidance, affirmations keep me focused that life is what I make it. Not all things go to plan and that’s ok, you just need to keep moving forward one step at a time.

How do you manage days or periods where you are not as motivated?  

I don’t push myself to extremes. If there is a huge day where I just cannot think of doing my yoga or walking at 8 or 9pm then I don’t. I might do some light stretches to wind down or meditate. Otherwise, I may just flop halfway and injure myself! In general, I remember that exercise is so amazing. It will give me strength, control and inspiration to be the best I can. I never walk out of a yoga session feeling worse off than when I started.

What do you do to treat yourself?

I love a good massage; they are the perfect way to appreciate your body and mind.

What is your active truth?

Do what you love, appreciate your mind, body and spirit. Inspire others, spread the love – health and wellness is such a journey you will change your life forever. Embrace it, challenge it and don’t ever give up.
