We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and fitness, so we aim to capture the variety of ways women choose to be active to give you ideas and inspiration on how to live your best active life.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Rochelle Courtenay, I am 47 years old and the Founder of Share the Dignity. I love living in Sandgate and I am a mother to two beautiful girls who passionately love their best friends and netball.
What does active living mean to you?
Active living to me is doing whatever it is that makes my heart sing that day, whether that is a walk and a talk, a bike ride or a bit of closing all the tabs in my head with an hour of yoga if it is what works for me.
What do you like to do to stay active?
I love to play netball! I love putting on some Abba, Fleetwood Mac or Ed Sheeran from my playlist and riding my bike to lose myself in the fresh air and soak in the beautiful Sandgate foreshore surrounds.
What is your definition of healthy?
My definition of healthy is a good balance of everything, getting a decent amount of sleep, time to relax, work, friends and exercise. It is all about balance for me.
Have you always been active and healthy?
I have always played netball, I love it, but there have been times in my life where exercise was not in the picture and my health suffered. Exercising for me is about keeping mind, body and spirit in check. Also, prioritising sleep! It helps me to get my 8 hours of sleep and that makes everything ok!
What is your daily or weekly routine?
I try to walk a couple of 10k a week, a bike ride, I like to do weights a couple times a week and play netball once a week. If I can fit it in, I like to do yoga on the beach.
What daily habits keep you fit and healthy?
I start my day with a walk or a bike ride and half an hour of being grateful. It starts my day off beautifully and I really notice it when I don’t do it..
What is your best active living hack?
Doing stuff you enjoy doing, if you don’t love it you will end up resenting it.
Favourite healthy meal?
I love my rocket, feta, pine nut salad. It's my go to in summer and a good hearty bowl of pumpkin soup for winter. I really enjoy simple food.
What challenges do you need to overcome in order to achieve healthy and active living?
Finding time is my biggest challenge that I am always trying to overcome.
What is the best ‘side-effect’ of staying healthy and active?
I think hands down the best side effect of being active is having a good nights sleep. The days I exercise I solid sleep and you can't buy that!
What (or who) inspires and motivates you?
Women in general, women who just try to be the best they can be in everything that makes them healthy and happy. I really admire Michelle Obama, I love her balance, compassion and take on a healthy lifestyle.
How do you overcome negative thoughts?
I think it is normal for these to creep in, it is really about flipping the conversation in your head to one of appreciation. I love my legs they help me walk, run, jump. I love my arms they hug my kids and help me feed myself. I am lucky to have great health and for that I am so grateful. Keep those negative thoughts at bay!
How do you practice self care?
Oooh I love a good bubble bath. I also routinely have a massage booked on the first Wednesday of each Month. I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to do these.
How do you manage days or periods where you are not as motivated?
Eat whatever I want, sleep and rest and I am at a good place in life when I acknowledge that I feel better when I exercise so I don’t have long stints without it. It’s the travel that gets in my way mostly. However, I live guilt free, I have spent too many years beating myself up for what I don’t do or what I am not good at.
What do you do to treat yourself?
I treat myself with a good date with hubby at a nice restaurant. Good food, good wine, great company.
