How She Does It - Roxy Letts The Thicc Yogi
Posted on August 08 2018
In our 'How She Does It' series we interview women about how they incorporate active and healthy habits into their lives. We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and fitness, so we aim to capture the variety of ways women choose to be active to give you ideas and inspiration on how to live your best active life.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Roxy Letts and I'm 30 years young. I work in Radiation Oncology Management at Newport Beach in California and I live with my loving fiancé, Delano, my chihuahua Love, and my black labrador Yoko. I love yoga, the beach, my pups, and self love/care.
What does active living mean to you?
Active living means to wake up and live in the moment every day, appreciate the present and don’t worry about past or future.
What do you like to do to stay active?
I enjoy, yoga, reformer Pilates, barre, and hiking.
What is your definition of healthy?
Health to me encompasses both mind and body equally. For a healthy mind and body you need to fuel yourself with unprocessed, whole foods, and stay physically active to your capabilities.
Have you always been active and healthy?
Growing up and through my teen years I was very active playing club level volleyball but after college I slowed down a lot and struggled with severe anxiety that left me housebound, sedative, and extremely overweight. In the past few years I decided I need to get back on track physically to help my anxiety. I am doing this by practicing yoga daily, meditating, and fuelling my body with unprocessed foods.
What is your daily or weekly routine?
Every other day I am usually in a studio whether it be reformer Pilates, barre, or yoga. On the days I don’t feel like doing a group workout I walk the beach or the bay with my fiancé and dogs.
What daily habits keep you fit and healthy?
Daily habits that keep me healthy are, yoga (whether it be at home or in a studio) parking my car in the farthest spot from work to get in those extra steps, taking the stairs rather than the lift, or walking my dogs that extra block. Reaching for whole foods rather than processed junk, and practicing meditation before bed.
What is your best active living hack?
Stay positive and know your limits, it is super hard in this day and age to not compare ourselves to the people we see on TV or on Instagram but once you realise the only one you need to compete with is yourself, your whole attitude will change.
Favourite healthy meal?
I’ve been loving rocket salads recently, especially in these hot summer months. My go to recipe is rocket, spinach, chia seeds, walnuts, baby tomatoes, pepitas, cucumber, white onion, and top it off with balsamic vinegar and extra virgin cold pressed olive oil. I also LOVE kombucha! In the past I would gorge myself with diet cola but have made the switch to kombucha and have never looked back.
What health craze are you guilty of loving?
I haven’t really been too big on health crazes but I am currently following an anti-inflammatory diet which is based on phytonutrients, probiotics, and cold water fish. I decided to switch my diet to see if it would affect my anxiety after a lot of research on how inflammation affects your entire body system.
What challenges do you need to overcome in order to achieve healthy and active living?
A lot of women DM me and say they thought they were too big/ out of shape to practice yoga. This is super disheartening for me to hear. You are never too fat/ unhealthy to do yoga. It is for everybody type and every fitness level. I tell women to start by practicing at home with free YouTube tutorials and build up their confidence to join a studio. All the group yoga practices I have been to are very welcoming and accommodating to every level.
What is the best 'side-effect' of staying healthy and active?
For me personally it has been anxiety and stress relief. After a long hike or a challenging Pilates class I feel exhilarated and stress free.
What (or who) inspires or motivates you?
Knowing how horrible and secluded I felt while going through deep anxiety issues motivates me to keep active and eat healthy every day!
How do you overcome negative thoughts?
I overcome negative thoughts through meditation. It has taught me to slow down and dissect these thoughts and realise the bulk of them are irrational.
How do you practice self care?
I practice self care through yin yoga, spa visits, beach days, and taking time off from my hectic professional life.
How do you manage days or periods where you are not as motivated?
I remind myself of how far I have come and how much better I feel after a good workout.
What do you do to treat yourself?
Shopping! I work hard for my money and I don’t feel guilty when I indulge at the mall.
