How She Does It - Sarah Donges
Posted on July 04 2018
In our 'How She Does It' series we interview women about how they incorporate active and healthy habits into their lives. We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and fitness, so we aim to capture the variety of ways women choose to be active to give you ideas and inspiration on how to live your best active life.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Sarah Donges, my kids think I am 24 but as a child of the 70’s I am not. I own a business called Box For Monkeys and an app called Simple Kids Activities with a business partner. I also own The Beauty Tutor. I live in Lilyfield in Sydney’s Inner West, I am married and have three kids with their rounded up ages being 7,5 and 2.
What do you like to do to stay active?
With three little kids being active is not that difficult! We are fortunate that I can walk to drop each of the kids off at school and family daycare and I can walk to the office. I also do yoga at least 3 times a week.
What is your definition of healthy?
Eating well means a lot to me and my family. We love to cook and cook nearly everything from scratch. I even make things like muesli, mayonnaise, chutney, jam, pickles and I love to do lots of baking.
Have you always been active and healthy?
I have always loved to be active and healthy. All through school I played hockey and then have been practicing yoga for around 20 years.
What is your daily or weekly routine?
I don’t really have a set routine. Walking to and from work is something I try to do daily which is around 20 minutes each way and then I squeeze in yoga when I can around family life.
What daily habits keep you fit and healthy?
The kids definitely keep me fit and I always have to have a good breakfast. If ever I skip it (which is rare now) I find the rest of the day I eat crap. I also drink a lot of water which makes me feel better.
Favourite healthy meal?
Brown rice salmon stir fry. This might sound daggy but my husband does not eat fish so whenever it’s just the kids and I, we cook this. It’s a winner as my son wrote on my mother’s day card that he loves me because I cook this!
What health craze are you guilty of loving?
Gosh, that’s a tricky one. I can’t think of any I love….I can think of plenty I have tried and don’t like though, turmeric latte’s and green juices. Oh and Kale, gross!
What challenges do you need to overcome in order to achieve healthy and active living?
Limit the late nights so in the morning I have lots of energy.
What is the best "side effect" of staying healthy and active?
Feeling great and being mentally strong. Running your own business is challenging and you need to be in the right frame of mind for it.
Who inspires of motivates you?
My kids definitely inspire and motivate me.
How do you practice self care?
Yoga is my self care. If I am feeling flat it helps so much and I can also work through big business problems while practicing.
How do you manage days or periods where you are not as motivated?
I tell myself that it’s ok to feel like that. It will pass and just be kind to yourself until it does.
What do you do to treat yourself?
I love bubbles and chocolate.
Top 3 songs on your workout playlist?
None! I never listen to music when I am walking. This is normally my time to chat to the kids or call friends and family.
