How She Does It - Stevie Angel, Nadia Tucker and Kate Middleton from the Active Truth team

In our 'How She Does It' series we interview women about how they incorporate active and healthy habits into their lives. We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and fitness, so we aim to capture the variety of ways women choose to be active to give you ideas and inspiration on how to live your best active life.

In this week's special How She Does It, Our founders Stevie and Nadia and Marketing and Customer Service Officer Kate sit down and chat about how they manage a healthy and active lifestyle. 

What does active living mean to you? 

Stevie:  Trying to find ways that incorporate movement into your everyday life that work for you. That could include going to the gym and working out, walking around the block at lunch time, or playing handball or kicking the football with the kids.

Nadia:  Same as Stevie! I don’t get the opportunity to exercise everyday but I certainly try to throw in a few incidental movements here and there, usually the housework!

What do you like to do to stay active? 

Stevie: I go through phases in terms of what kind of training I like to do. I’ve done netball, weight training, crossfit, the lot! At the moment I’m into running and I’m training for a couple of events happening later this year. I'm also attending pilates regularly in my attempt to stay injury free!

Kate: I grew up dancing competitively, and even now I love to put some music on and have a good boogie when I’m alone. I love walking my dog Levi, going to the beach, nature hikes and I try to do 5 reformer pilates classes a week or maybe some yoga.

What is your definition of healthy? 

Kate: Staying true to yourself, listening to your body and mind and fuelling it with what it needs every day. Trying to get 8 hours sleep, eating right for you and moving your body for enjoyment!

Have you always been active and healthy? 

Stevie: No, I’ve gone through periods of my life where I’ve had less time or less inclination to be active and healthy. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve put more emphasis on staying active and looking after my body, and I really enjoy all of the benefits that being physical brings to my life, including increased energy levels and mental health.

Nadia: Yes! I grew up in country Victoria and there were a lot of great opportunities to play sport and be active. I used to play sport at a competitive level all through my childhood, teens and early twenties and getting active is something I’ve continued to do today. The kind of sport or activity has obviously changed through various stages of my life, whether that’s running, netball, boxing, and my new favourite - golf!

What is your daily or weekly routine if you have one? 

Stevie: I schedule my pilates classes 3 times a week and I go the same time every week. I book this in advance so they are non-negotiable! I also like to run in the mornings, usually before the kids wake up, and fit this in when I can around my husband and my work schedules.

Kate: Every Sunday I try to meal prep some yummy healthy meals for work. Every morning before work I do a Pilates class, so 5 a week. If it isn’t dark by the time I get home, I’ll walk my dog and I always try to do something fun and active during the weekend, whether that’s dancing with friends out at night or at a live music gig or going for a lovely walk in nature.

What daily habits keep you fit and healthy?

Nadia: Ever since I was a young girl my grandma made me have a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar every morning! My boys and I recently got fitness trackers so we are currently on a challenge to see who can get the most steps in the day. I haven’t won yet but I’m determined!

Kate: Wearing activewear to work everyday means that I’m already in my workout clothes, so there’s no excuse for not making the effort to exercise! I also carry a water bottle everywhere. 

What is your best active living hack? 

Stevie: Scheduling your workouts like you would any other commitment

Nadia: Walking meetings!

Favourite healthy meal? 

Stevie: Oven-baked salmon – I make individual parcels up with asparagus, cherry tomatoes, pesto, lemon and salmon and bake it all together. So easy and so yum!

Kate: My boyfriend makes healthy banana pancakes for me on Sunday mornings and I honestly live for them! I enjoy them with a cheeky drizzle of maple syrup and it’s the best start to the day.

What health craze are you guilty of loving? 

Nadia: I’m not one to follow crazes.

Kate: Meal prep!

What challenges do you need to overcome in order to achieve healthy and active living?

All: Time management!

What is the best 'side-effect' of staying healthy and active? 

Stevie: Just being able to do anything active at short notice! When I was on holiday in New Zealand, my husband and I did a 30km spontaneous bike ride. It was one of my favourite experiences from the trip and such a nice way to sightsee, but if I didn’t have a reasonable base level of fitness, I wouldn’t have had that amazing experience.

Kate: Confidence in myself and my ability to do physically demanding tasks!

What (or who) inspires and motivates you? 

Nadia: Our Active Truth community! Seeing them out and about in their activewear honestly makes my day.

Kate: Lots of people! My parents, particularly my Mum really inspires and motivates me. She’s been a dance teacher for over 30 years so she’s incredibly strong, healthy and fit. She overcame her battle with cancer a few years ago and she’s honestly a gun for her age (51!!), I don’t know how she keeps up with her young students, but she does.

How do you overcome negative thoughts?

Nadia: I meditate! Mental health is so important and this really helps me clear my mind.

How do you practice self care? 

Stevie: Taking long walks with Bruno my dog!

Kate: On a weekly level, I always schedule in at least one catch up with a friend or friends because surrounding yourself with wonderful, inspiring people can be one of the best forms of self care for me. On a daily level, I love listening to podcasts, journaling and having cuddles with my dog. On an occasional level, treating myself to nails, makeup, online shopping and getting my brows done.

How do you manage days or periods where you are not as motivated?

Nadia: I get the most difficult task done first and then everything else feels easy afterwards! It totally gives my motivation a much needed boost.

Kate: Just be persistent and get it done. I find once you’ve completed the thing you didn’t want to do, it’s never as bad as you originally anticipated it to be.

What do you do to treat yourself? 

Stevie: I love a good home magazine and cup of tea in the sunshine on the weekend.

Nadia: Massages and champagne!
